Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service ( QPWS ) is a subdivision of the Department of Environment and Resource Management of the Government of Queensland in Australia .

The QPWS, based in Brisbane, manages national parks , marine reserves , fish sanctuaries, nature reserves and conservation parks, including 80,000 km² of land, 72,000 km² of marine reserves and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park with 345,000 km².

The agency was established in December 1998 under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 and Marine Parks Act 2004 . The head office is in Brisbane .

The organization is primarily responsible for the protection of wild animals and the preservation of the biodiversity of the protected areas. There is a corresponding management plan for each national park.

In order to cope with the tasks, around 700 park rangers are responsible for compliance with the regulations of the protected areas, the camping facilities and hiking trails, nature conservation and the protection of wild animals. Another 400 people who deal with technical, scientific and operational matters are employed by QWPS.

The QPWS manages protected areas in ten regions, on land in South East Queensland , Western Queensland , Sunshine Coast / Wide Bay-Burnett , Capricornia , Wet Tropics and off the coast of Cape York / Savannah , Moreton Bay , Great Sandy , Northern Queensland and Central Queensland .
