The Repulse Islands National Park (English: Repulse Islands National Park ) is a national park in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland . It is located 875 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and about 25 kilometers east of Proserpine .

The group consists of three islands off Cape Conway , which belong to the Whitsunday Islands and thus also to the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Site . They are called North Repulse Island , East Repulse Island, and South Repulse Island .

The Newry Islands , Lindeman Islands and Smith Islands National Parks are in the vicinity ; on the mainland of Conway National Park .

history

The island in Repulse Bay was discovered by Captain Cook in 1770 . He thought he had found a way north for his ship here, but had to realize that it was only a closed bay and not a strait. So he was repulsed (ger .: repulsed ). Therefore he named the bay and the islands at the southern entrance accordingly.

fauna

Water birds nest on all three islands . Access to the islands is therefore limited during the breeding season.

Facilities

Wild camping is permitted as long as the breeding birds are not disturbed. Some toilets and picnic tables are available. Open fires are prohibited in the park.

The islands can only be reached by private boats.
