The Teerk Roo Ra National Park (English: Teerk Roo Ra National Park ) is a national park in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland . It is located 22 kilometers east of Brisbane and 4 kilometers east of Cleveland on Peel Island in Moreton Bay .

In the vicinity are the national parks Naree Budjong Djara , Venman Bushland , Fort Lytton , St. Helena Island and Moreton Island .

history

From 1874 to the 1890s, Peel Island served as a quarantine station for lepers and from 1910 to 1916 as a home for alcoholics. In 1907, the only leprosy hospital in Australia was opened on the island to accommodate both whites and Aborigines . It was in operation until 1959.

Most of the island is now closed to the public in order to preserve the historic hospital. In the future, guided tours through the hospital should be available.

flora

The island is surrounded by mangroves , with the exception of the sandy beach in the horseshoe-shaped bay to the south. Eucalyptus trees of the species Scribbly Gum ( Eucalyptus signata ) grow in the interior of the island .

Facilities and access

Wild camping is only permitted in Horseshoe Bay and Platypus Bay in the south of the island. The rest of the island is not allowed to be entered.

The two bays can only be reached with private land.
