The Epping Forest National Park (English: Epping Forest National Park ) is a national park in the east of the Australian state of Queensland .

The park is for scientific purposes only and is therefore not open to the public. Only scientists, rangers and volunteers are allowed in.

location

It is located 855 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and 115 kilometers northwest of Clermont near the Belyando River .

The Mazeppa and Narrien Range national parks are in the vicinity .

National nature

Epping Forest is a shallow or gently sloping clay pan through which Fox Creek , a non-year-round tributary of the Belyando River, flows. In the past, a large, year-round watercourse must have flowed through this area, leaving massive sand deposits behind.

Flora and fauna

The access restrictions are intended to ensure that the Epping Forest remains as unchanged as possible, as it is the only remaining natural habitat of the endangered Northern Hairy Nose Wombat . At the last count of the animals living there, only 138 of these species were found. In the 1970s, however, the population was believed to have dropped to 20–30 wombats.

Besides the wombats, 127 species of birds, 43 species of reptiles, 10 species of frogs and 25 species of mammals are native to the park.

In the park there is a light eucalyptus forest . The wombats build their homes on the scattered sandy spots.
