The Barnard Island Group National Park (English: Barnard Island Group National Park ) is a national park in the northeast of the Australian state of Queensland .

location

It is located 1,296 km northwest of Brisbane and 25 km southeast of Innisfail off the coast on Kurrimine Beach .

The park consists of two archipelagos, the North Barnard Islands with the islands of Bresnahan, Hutchinson, Jessie, Kent and Lindquist and the South Barnard Islands with the islands of Sisters and Stephens .

Terrain forms

The islands lying 5–10 km off the coast rise between 19 and 95 m from the sea. The older North Barnard Islands consist of metamorphic rock, while the somewhat younger South Barnard Islands are made up of volcanic tuff with basalt deposits . The islands are estimated to be 420 million years old.

Flora and fauna

All islands are covered with dense rainforest . The larger the island, the greater the biodiversity in its rainforest. The coasts are lined with mangrove forests . The South Barnard Islands in particular are an important breeding area for seabirds, of which 23 different species have been observed on and around the islands. The national park is also part of the range of the Victoria Bird of Paradise .

history

The islands belonged to the Mamo Aboriginal tribe . In the 19th century, a small fishing settlement was established on the island of Sisters . In 1890 this settlement was completely destroyed by a cyclone .

In 1897 a small lighthouse was built on Kent . This lighthouse was also manned until 1918. Then, however, a cyclone made the evacuation of the lighthouse keeper and his family necessary. After that, the beacon was operated automatically.

Jessie, Bresnahan, Hutchinson, Sisters and Stephens were declared a national park in 1936. The islands of Kent and Lindquist followed in 1994.

Accessibility and facilities

The islands can be reached by boat from Kurrimine Beach. The island of Lindquist is a restricted military area and may not be entered. Camping is permitted on the islands of Kent and Stephens , but there are no special facilities other than picnic tables. For reasons of bird protection, access to Sisters Island is completely forbidden from September 1st to March 31st, which is limited to Stephens Island to the sand strip and the campsite during this time.
