The Davies Creek National Park (English Davies Creek National Park ) is an approximately 4.86 square kilometers national park in Queensland , Australia . The park is known for the Davies Creek Falls , waterfalls that cascade down over large granite rocks in several steps.
Location and access
The park is located in the Atherton Tablelands and is about 16 kilometers east of Mareeba and 25 kilometers west of Cairns with Dinden National Park in the immediate vicinity. The park can be reached via the Kennedy Highway , about halfway between Mareeba and Speewah , the Davies Creek Road branches off, on which you reach the Davies Creek Campground at the foot of the waterfalls after 6 kilometers .
landscape
The landscape of Davies Creek National Park consists largely of Tinaroo- granite , which in the early Permian , before about 260 to 270 million years ago, in the from metamorphic rocks existing Hodgkinson formation penetrated and these covered partially. Weathering and erosion of the metamorphic rock exposed the granite. The Davies Creek, a tributary of the Barron River , falls over the exposed granite layers in several stages about 75 m down.
Flora and fauna
The valley of Davies Creek is characterized by low, open eucalyptus forest with individual Melaleucas and acacias as well as grass trees and termite mounds . One of the three retreat areas of the endangered Northern Bettong ( Bettongia tropica ) from the rat kangaroo family is also located here .
