The Idalia National Park (English: Idalia National Park ) is a national park in the center of the Australian state of Queensland .

The national park was opened by Prince Philip in 1990 .

location

It is located 893 kilometers west of Brisbane and 113 kilometers southwest of Blackall in the Gowan Range .

The national parks Mariala , Hell Hole Gorge and Welford are in the vicinity .

National nature

The Gowan Range is a table highland in which the Bulloo River rises. There are many sandstone canyons and other wild rock formations in the park.

Flora and fauna

Most of the table land is overgrown with mulga .

Yellow-footed rock kangaroos , mountain kangaroos , gray and red giant kangaroos , back stripe wallabies and swamp wallabies can be found in the gorges and on the plateaus . A relocated population of the endangered bridled nailtail wallabies can also be observed in the park.

Culture

In the park there are a number of remains of the Aborigines who used to live here . Fragments of artifacts, stone patterns and storage bins. The ruins of two previous settlements of European immigrants, Idalia and Collabara , can also be seen.

Facilities and access

Wild camping is permitted in designated areas in the park, but there are no special facilities. There is a whole network of hiking trails across the park.

From Blackall head west towards Isisford . After 43 kilometers, a dirt road branches off at Malyenton to the southwest towards Windorah . Follow this for 26 kilometers to Bendidi . There, a track branches off to the south, on which you reach the former settlement of Idalia after 44 kilometers .

The park can only be reached with a four-wheel drive vehicle in dry weather. Even with short rains, the roads can become impassable.
