The Marpa National Park (English Marpa National Park ) is a 37.8 hectare national park in Queensland , Australia . It is located within the Great Barrier Reef and is therefore part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site .

It is administered by the local Aborigines together with the Queensland National Park Administration under the status of Cape York Peninsula Aboriginal Land (CYPAL) .

location

The national park is located 315 kilometers northwest of Cairns on the east coast of the Cape York Peninsula in the Coral Sea . The islands lie off Point Stewart in Princess Charlotte Bay , 70 kilometers southeast of Coen and 200 kilometers northwest of Cooktown .

In the Coral Sea in the vicinity are the national parks Claremont Isles and Flinders Group , on the mainland KULLA (McIlwraith Range) , Lama Lama and Lakefield .

Geology and nature

The national park consists of three sandstone islands Ronganhu , Errewerpinha and Olilu , the smallest has a diameter of just over 250 meters, the largest is 1.25 kilometers long. In contrast to the reef islands made of limestone, they are part of the mainland and were only separated by the rising sea level after the last ice age .

Mangroves thrive in small sandy bays , in the higher parts mainly grass grows between the rocky areas, and bushes and shrubs in the wind-protected corners.

Untouched by humans, the islands offer a refuge for numerous plants and animals, including the endangered reef tricks ( Esacus giganteus ), curlew ( Numenius madagascariensis ) and sooty oystercatchers ( Haematopus fuliginosus ) which can be observed along the beaches, while white-bellied sea eagles ( Haliaeetus leucogoge ) , Peregrine falcon ( Falco peregrinus ) and osprey ( Pandion cristatus ) circling over the islands.

The reefs and extensive seagrass meadows surrounding the islands are an important habitat for dolphins , dugongs , sea turtles and saltwater crocodiles . During the breeding season, the endangered green turtles ( Chelonia mydas ) lay their eggs on Ronganhu and Olilu.
