The Mount Cook National Park (English Mount Cook National Park ) is an approximately 5 square kilometer national park in Queensland , Australia .
location
The park is located in the Far North Queensland region . It is located about 180 kilometers north of Cairns and 3 kilometers south of Cooktown . Located between the Mulligan Highway and the coast to the Coral Sea , the national park protects the area around the 431 meter high Mount Cook . Apart from the 6 kilometer hiking trail to the top, there are no visitor facilities or roads into the park.
history
Lieutenant Phillip Parker King named Mount Cook in June 1819 during his circumnavigation of northern Australia. Not knowing that Lieutenant James Cook had already named the mountain Gores Mount in 1770 , after John Gore , his third lieutenant. The name Gores Mount has been forgotten over time.
Flora and fauna
Rainforest and tropical forest with a heather substructure dominate both on the higher slopes and along the streams and rivers. Grasslands grow on the southern slopes.
The different habitats are home to a multitude of different plants and animals, including the New Guinea amethyst python ( Morelia amethistina ) and the northern marten ( Dasyurus hallucatus ), which is classified as endangered . In the summer months you can see two-colored fruit pigeons ( Ducula bicolour ) and Paradieslieste ( Tanysiptera sylvia ), a species of kingfisher .
