John Gore

John Gore (* 1729 or 1730 in Middlesex County in Virginia , † September 10, 1790 in Greenwich ) was a British-American seaman who sailed for the British Royal Navy on the Dolphin under John Byron and Samuel Wallis .

Life

John Gore accompanied James Cook on the first and third expeditions and acted as translator between Captain Cook and the "kings" of Tahiti. He also ultimately took command of the third expedition after James Cook and Charles Clerke's deaths. In 1771 he commanded the ship of the botanist Joseph Banks on a trip to Iceland and the Hebrides . Although he was promoted to postcaptain on his return on October 3, 1780 , he stayed in Greenwich on the old position of James Cook at Greenwich Hospital, where he died in 1790.

Gore's son, John Gore, became a lieutenant in the Royal Navy in 1795.

Honors

After John Gore, the Gore Point and the Gore Peninsula ( Gore Peninsula ) in the Alaskan Kenai Fjords National Park were named by the captain Nathaniel Portlock . Portlock was a close friend whose family he already knew from Virginia and who explored the Pacific coast of northwest America in the 18th century.

Movie

In the four-part television film Wind and Stars , John Gore was portrayed by the German actor Erich Hallhuber .
