The Cape Melville National Park ( English Cape Melville National Park ) is a national park in the northeast of the Australian state of Queensland .
location
The reserve is 1711 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and 120 kilometers northwest of Cooktown on the east coast of the Cape York Peninsula .
In the vicinity are the Flinders Group and Howick Group national parks off the coast, and Jack River and Starcke on the mainland .
Terrain forms
The granite blocks of the Melville Range and the sandstone rocks of the Altanmoui Range are characteristic of the national park .
flora
In the park there are rain and mangrove forests , light forest and grassland. Since the park is very remote, many endemic plants have developed there, such as the foxtail palm ( Wodyetia bifurcata ).
history
The Othawa Aboriginal tribe live in the park area . Their long tradition can be seen in rock carvings , barrows and Køkkenmøddinger . During an expedition in 2013, researchers discovered three previously unknown animal species ; a leaf- tailed gecko ( Saltuarius eximius ), a gold-colored skink ( Saproscincus saltus ), and a frog ( Cophixalus petrophilus ).
Access and facilities
The park can only be reached via unpaved roads. A 180 kilometer long road runs along the coast from Cooktown to Wakooka Station in the south of the park. From there, a 35-kilometer slope leads to the campground at Bathurst Bay on the north coast. From Kalpowar Crossing in Lakefield National Park , Wakooka Station can be reached via a 70-kilometer slope. The unpaved roads can only be driven on with all-wheel drive vehicles with increased ground clearance. The dry season from August to November is a good travel time . In the rainy season the roads can be impassable.
Camping in the park is permitted on the coast, but there are no special facilities at the campsites. Hikes along the beach are popular.
