The Girringun National Park (English Girringun National Park ) is a 2085.5 square kilometer national park in Queensland , Australia . Since 1988 it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site Wet Tropics of Queensland because of its natural beauty, biological diversity , evolutionary history and as a habitat for numerous endangered animal species . About half of the park is also part of the Wooroonooran Important Bird Area , which is home to numerous endemic bird species. It is characterized by hard leaf vegetation and numerous waterfalls.
history
The national park was originally called Lumholtz National Park , after the scientist Carl Sofus Lumholtz when it was expelled in 1992. The Blencoe Falls section was added to the park in 2000 before it was given its current name 'Girringun' in 2005. On National Park Day, March 28, 2010, the government announced that it would be expanding to include Mount Fox National Park , an additional 2,810 acres.
location
The park is located in the North Queensland region , approximately 20 kilometers northwest of Ingham and 90 kilometers southwest of Innisfail . It borders immediately to the north on the Kirrama and Girramay National Park . All four main areas, Mount Fox , Blencoe Falls, Wallaman Falls and Dalrymple Gap are accessible from the Bruce Highway via Abergowrie Road, which branches off at Ingham. Some of the roads in the park are unpaved, so dry conditions and four-wheel drive are recommended for driving.
Attractions
The predominant vegetation in Girringun National Park is hardwood forests, small pockets of rainforest are on the eastern slopes and on the ridges. The Seaview, George and Cardwell ranges of hills determine the landscape. During a volcanic eruption 100,000 years ago, parts of the park were covered with a layer of lava up to 10 meters thick and numerous volcanic bombs were distributed over the area.
The most famous geological sightseeing are the Wallaman Falls, with 268 m the highest waterfalls in Australia. In several stages, initially 90 m, then in several stages another 230 m, the Blencoe Falls plunge into the gorge of the Herbert River .
