The Nicoll Scrub National Park (English Nicoll Scrub National Park ) is a nearly 27 hectare national park in Queensland , Australia directly on the border with New South Wales .

location

It is located in the hinterland of the Gold Coast in the South East Queensland region about 90 kilometers south of Brisbane and 16 kilometers north of Murwillumbah . The closest city is Currumbin . From here you can reach the park via the Currumbin Creek Road heading west, after about 8 kilometers you will pass the national park. There are no visitor facilities there.

Springbrook and Burleigh Head national parks are in the vicinity .

history

The park is named after the Nicoll family, early pioneers of the Currumbin Valley and one of the first Europeans in this area who recognized the value of the jungle and therefore preserved it in its original state. In 1986, the Queensland government purchased the property from the family and declared it a national park.

Flora and fauna

Nicoll Scrub National Park protects a small area of primary rainforest on the northern to northwestern slopes of the McPherson Range . In the upper areas, which are up to 180 meters high, mainly open araucaria rainforest grows, including dense littoral rainforest . In an inventory in 2000, 78 different vertebrate species were counted , including seven mammal , 56 bird , six reptile and eight amphibian species .

Among the endangered species found in the park include the Gray-headed flying foxes ( Pteropus poliocephalus ), the orange-tailed skinks Shade ( Saproscincus rosei ) and the Richmond birdwing ( Ornithoptera richmondia ) from the family of butterflies .
