Flora and fauna

The park protects the flora and fauna of the Brigalow Belt North bioregion . 87 percent of this ecosystem has been cleared in the past 70 years in order to use the land for agriculture, especially for livestock. In particular, the buffalo grass ( Cenchrus ciliaris ) and Parthenium , which are introduced as fodder for cattle , are becoming a danger to the local flora and fauna. Originally the vegetation consisted of Blackwood ( Acacia melanoxylon ) and Gidgee ( Acacia cambadgei ), with a substructure of Brigalow ( Acacia harpophylla ). Some of the last remaining areas are protected in the Nairana National Park and offer a refuge for numerous animals, including the endangered crested kite ( Lophoictinia isura ), the Coromandel pygmy duck ( Nettapus coromandelianus ), the giant stork ( Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus ) and the letter pigeon ( Geophaps scripta ) .
