The Gregory Highway is a trunk road in Queensland , Australia . It has a length of 912 km and runs in a northwest-southeast direction essentially parallel to the east coast of Australia.

The Gregory Highway got its name from Augustus Gregory , an explorer who made several voyages of discovery in Australia in the mid-19th century. The course of the highway more or less follows the route that Gregory took on his journey in the years 1855-1856.

Springsure - Clermont

The Gregory Highway begins in Springsure in central Queensland, where it branches off from the Dawson Highway . From Springsure, the Gregory Highway initially runs 65 km north, where it crosses the Capricorn Highway (A4) in Emerald , which leads from Rockhampton to Barcaldine. North of Emerald, the Gregory Highway runs 105 km northwest to Clermont . A few kilometers north of the city, the Peak Downs Highway (S70) branches off to Mackay to the east.

Clermont - Charters Towers

North of Clermont, the road is called Gregory Developmental Road . and is referred to as State Road 63. This continues in a north-westerly direction through wide stretches of land characterized by cattle ranches until after about 370 km Charters Towers is reached. There she crosses the Flinders Highway (A6), which leads from Townsville to Cloncurry .

Charters Towers - Georgetown

After Charters Towers, Gregory Developmental Road continues in a north-westerly direction. After approximately 250 km you will reach Lynd Junction (Oasis Roadhouse) , where the Kennedy Developmental Road (S62) crosses in a north-south direction. Then the Gregory Developmental Road leads about 180 km to Georgetown. There it ends when it meets the Gulf Developmental Road , part of National Highway 1 .

The highest point along the highway is 328 m, the lowest is 175 m.
