Georgetown is a small town in the north of the Australian state of Queensland .
The Etheridge River flows through the city. It is located on the Savannah Way (also: Gulf Developmental Road ), which it crosses from west to east. To the south branches off the Forsayth Road , an outback trail that leads to Forsayth and on through the Newcastle Range to Einasleigh . Cairns is 412 km east and Normanton 301 km west.

Georgetown in the Far North Queensland region is the capital of the Etheridge Shire Local Government Area , which also includes the small towns of Mount Surprise , Forsayth, and Einasleigh. At the 2006 census, the city had 254 inhabitants.
History and economy
The Etheridge River experienced a gold rush in the 1870s and the city of Georgetown was founded where gold was mined. Originally called Etheridge , the city was renamed Georgetown in 1871 in honor of the local Gold Commissioner , Howard St. George .
Around 1900 the cattle industry in the region replaced gold mining as the most important branch of the economy.
