geography
The Shire is located in the north of the state in the south of the Cape York Peninsula about 1400 km northeast of the capital Brisbane .

history
Around 1870, the settlement Etheridge was built in the area, which was renamed Georgetown in 1872. The name was retained as the name of the Etheridge River. In 1879 the region received local self-government under the name Einasleigh division after another village in the area. But since the administration was in Georgetown, this led to confusion with the delivery of mail. Therefore, the LGA was renamed Etheridge Shire in 1919.
administration
The Cook Shire Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
