Coordinates: 17 ° 55 ′ S , 138 ° 49 ′ E The Aboriginal Shire of Doomadgee is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 1828 km² and has about 1400 inhabitants.
geography
The Shire is located in the northeast of the state within the Burke Shire about 1700 km northwest of the capital Brisbane and 860 km northeast of Alice Springs . The greater part of the LGA lies in the interior of the Burke Shire on the Nicholson River , a second part is a coastal strip on the Gulf of Carpentaria .
All settled residents of the Shire live in Nicholson / New Doomadgee on the southeastern edge of the area.
history
In 1930 a mission for the Aborigines living in the area was founded in Burketown , which shortly after moved about 100 km northwest to Doomadgee (then spelled Dumaji) on the coast. After just four years a cyclone destroyed the mission and it moved far inland to the Nicholson River, where the new Doomadgee was founded. In 2008, the area north of the mission, including the old strip of land on the coast, was handed over to the self-government of the indigenous people and an Aboriginal Local Government Area was established.
administration
The Doomadgee Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
