geography

The Shire is located in the northeast of the state on the border with the Northern Territory and on the Gulf of Carpentaria approximately 1,750 km northwest of the capital Brisbane and approximately 890 km northeast of Alice Springs .

The largest city and the administrative seat of the LGA is Burketown with around 160 inhabitants. Other localities are Gidya, Gregory, Lawn Hill and Nicholson.

history

The coast on the Gulf of Carpentaria was discovered and mapped early by Europeans, but it was not until 1860 that exploration and settlement by land began. The Carpentaria station was built on the Albert River and was renamed Burketown in honor of Robert O'Hara Burke , who traversed Australia . Because of the resistance of the indigenous people, it took until 1885 for a real settlement with its own administration to develop.

In 1931 an Aboriginal mission began in Burketown and was moved to Doomadgee. The Doomadgee Shire is now an independent administrative area, which is enclosed by the Burke Shire.

administration

The Burke Shire Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
