The Peak Downs Highway is a trunk road in Queensland , Australia . It has a length of 264 km and runs in a northeast-southwest direction from Mackay on the east coast of Australia to the Gregory Developmental Road north of Clermont . It connects the Whitsunday coast with the west of Queensland.

The highway is notorious for being particularly dangerous because it is used for all freight traffic between the port city of Mackay and the coal mines of the Bowen Basin. Often one encounters heavy transports of construction vehicles, bulldozers or tires.

The highest point on the highway is at 411 m, the lowest at 13 m.
