The Basalt River is a river in the east of the Australian state of Queensland .

River course

The river rises east of the Reedy Springs settlement on the east flank of the Great Dividing Range and flows east, parallel to the Great Basalt Wall further south. About 60 kilometers north of Charters Towers it passes under the Gregory Developmental Road and flows into the Burdekin River .

Hydrology and agriculture

The Basalt River has a series of large, deep and permanently filled with clear water water holes. The land in its catchment area is mainly used as pasture for cattle.
