The Diocesan Museum St. Afra is the central museum of the Diocese of Augsburg and is located in the Augsburg cathedral district directly behind the cathedral .

It was opened in 2000, and since then the Diocesan Museum has presented sacred art from 17 centuries. Nestled between the Gothic cathedral cloister, the Romanesque chapter house of the old cathedral monastery and the remains of the Carolingian cathedral, the museum welcomes visitors with a modern facade.

Exhibits

In the partly historical and partly newly created rooms, the museum houses a wide range of important works of art from the most varied of eras and genres in the collection that has existed since 1872. The exhibition also provides information about the Augsburg Cathedral and the history of the diocese.

With its extensive inventory of Augsburg goldsmiths in the form of liturgical implements and reliquaries , the museum also functions as a cathedral treasury . There are also works of art of European importance, such as the Ulrich's robes from the 10th century, the Ottonian bronze portal of the cathedral or the funeral weapons of Emperor Charles V , which convey the role of the church as one of the most important patrons and sponsors of the arts.
