history
The Augsburg cathedral district is located in the upper part of the city in the Augsburg city center planning area and forms a district together with the city center.
Founded in Roman times, the cathedral district experienced its boom with the construction of the Augsburg Cathedral in 1000. The Augsburg bishopric was one of the most important in Germany at that time. The bishop's residence and a district dominated by churches were built next to the High Cathedral.
Even then, the cathedral district was cut off from the rest of the city, and the bishops avoided contact with the citizens: even parts of the episcopal city were surrounded by a separate city wall. This created a district that is still characterized by churches, monasteries, bishop's houses, intimate gardens and narrow streets.
Its special significance can be seen in the names of the world-famous personalities who stayed and worked here at least temporarily, such as Martin Luther , Goethe and Leopold Mozart .
During the Second World War , large parts of the district were destroyed by regular Allied bombing . Not all buildings were rebuilt true to the original, which is why new buildings from the post-war period can also be found here.
The cathedral district today
As in the Middle Ages, the cathedral district is very quiet, which nowadays creates a strong contrast to the adjacent city center, which is characterized by shopping arcades, events and crowds.
The clear center of the quarter is the Augsburg Cathedral "Mariä Heimsuchung" with the two unmistakable bell towers, which is surrounded by the episcopal residence and embedded in a large park (which includes the courtyard garden). Otherwise, the mostly church buildings and a few old craft houses dominate.
This composition of the buildings gives an idea of why there is hardly any night life in the cathedral district - in contrast to the old and inner city. In recent years, however, due to the high number of vacancies, a creative scene has formed in several places in the district .
Mozart city of Augsburg
The composer Leopold Mozart was born on Frauentorstraße in the Domviertel in a craftsman's house (now known as the Mozarthaus), which is why Augsburg is considered the third Mozart city alongside Vienna and Salzburg . This fact was particularly important in the "Mozart Year 2006", which the city celebrated on a large scale.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had close ties to his father's city, and his Augsburg-born cousin and lover Marianne Mozart , the "Augsburger Bäsle", played a not insignificant role. Mozart himself was a guest in Augsburg several times and visited some relatives.
Meanwhile, the city of Augsburg offers extensive offers on the subject of "Mozart in Augsburg". The house where he was born, called the Mozart House, has been converted into a museum. There are also some other sights on the Mozart trails.
