The Fugger and Welser Adventure Museum is a museum in the cathedral district in Augsburg that deals with the history of the two Augsburg merchant families, Fugger and Welser . The museum opened in 2014.

location

The museum is located in Äußere Pfaffengässchen on the northeastern edge of the cathedral district of Augsburg. In the immediate vicinity is the approximately one hectare large monastery garden of the Benedictine Abbey of Sankt Stephan . The museum can be reached by public transport on tram line 2 or bus line 35 of the Augsburg public transport company .

history

The now listed Wieselhaus in Äußere Pfaffengässchen 23 in the cathedral district was built around 1530 in the style of the Italian Renaissance . The building was named after the telescope maker Johann Wiesel (1583–1662), who lived here from 1637 to 1642. Over the centuries, the Wieselhaus has been rebuilt several times, including the originally open arcades , which were unsuitable for the climatic conditions, closed and intermediate floors and additional walls inserted in the building. In contrast to a large part of the development in the area, the Wieselhaus survived the air raids on Augsburg during the Second World War unscathed.

In the last decades the residential building got into an increasingly poor structural condition, before it was renovated from 2009 by the "Stiftung Katholischer Studienfonds", which now owns the Wieselhaus. The original conditions from the Renaissance period were restored and adapted to modern conditions, for example the arcades were glazed. The total cost of the refurbishment was around 2.5 million euros. At the end of 2013, Regio Augsburg Tourismus GmbH moved into the building and set up the Fugger and Welser Adventure Museum there.

exhibition

The exhibition largely dispenses with original pieces from the time of the Fuggers and Welsers and instead uses films, sound pieces, projections and interactive content to bring the history of the two Augsburg merchant families to life - hence the name " Adventure Museum ". The museum also wants to place a special focus on reflecting on current economic events and accordingly regularly incorporate current business events into the exhibition concept.
