The Lama Lama National Park (English Lama Lama National Park ) is an approximately 355 square kilometer national park on the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland , Australia . It is administered by the local Aborigines , the Lama Lama Clan , together with the Queensland National Park Administration under the status of Cape York Peninsula Aboriginal Land (CYPAL) . The Llama Llama National Park opened in July 2008 and was the first national park to be operational in Queensland on the basis of the CYPAL regulations.

location

The park is located in the Far North Queensland region , 220 kilometers northwest of Cooktown and 270 kilometers southeast of Weipa . About halfway the Lilyvale Road branches off to the east from the Peninsula Developmental Road to the east into the park. In the national park there are some Aboriginal cultural sites that are not allowed to be entered.

landscape

The defining feature of the park is the Annie River . It forms the southern border of the park and flows further into the neighboring Rinyirru National Park (formerly Lakefield National Park) and further into Princess Charlotte Bay . Much of the northern Annie River basin is included in the park. It stretches from sandy hills in the west to the lower lying mudflats , which are criss-crossed by a dense network of small streams.

Flora and fauna

The national park is home to several important plant communities, one of which, Messmate Woodlands , dominated by Darwin Stringybark ( Eucalyptus tetrodonta ), is a specialty. These large, leafy forests thrive on the sandy plateaus and they are the preferred breeding grounds for the rare fox shabucks ( Erythrotriorchis radiatus ).

Furthermore, in the Lama Lama National Park an endangered subspecies of Binsenastrilde ( Neochmia ruficauda sublarescens ), the endangered Australian Masked Owl ( Tyto novaehollandiae kimberli ) and the rare Palm Cockatoos ( Probosciger aterrimus ) at home.
