Coolum Beach is a coastal town on the Sunshine Coast in the Australian state of Queensland .

geography

Coolum Beach is one of seven urban centers in the Sunshine Coast region . The nearest major city, Brisbane, is 119 kilometers away. The sandy beach that encompasses the city bears the same name. Mount Coolum National Park , the center of which is Mount Coolum, is located near Coolum Beach . The mountain is visible from almost all of Coolum Beach. In the west the place is surrounded by a hilly landscape, while in the east lies the Pacific Ocean .

history

The name Coolum is derived from the word kulum or gulum from a local Aboriginal language , which can be translated as 'blank' or 'without point'. This can be attributed to the fact that Mount Coolum has no point.

The first Europeans reached Coolum Beach in the 19th century. They grew sugar cane plantations , which would later ensure economic success. At the beginning of the 20th century, European settlers began to settle permanently. They created opportunities to connect Coolum Beach with other cities. So a tram was opened, which was expanded in the 1920s, and in addition a boat was built. These logistical measures promoted the success of sugar cane cultivation, which gave the city financial stability. From the 1960s onwards, sugar cane cultivation was replaced by tourism as the most important source of income.

tourism

Tourism in Coolum Beach began in the 1960s when Brisbane workers settled down and started building vacation homes. Today the beach is one of the most popular on the Sunshine Coast and also suitable for surfing. There is a local surf club at the southern end of the beach promenade and a surf school.
