description

Appearance and leaf

Eucalyptus beaniana grows as a medium-sized tree that reaches heights of 14 to 22 meters. The bark remains on the trunk and the larger branches, is gray-black, hard and furrowed lengthways. On branches thinner than 4 cm in diameter, the bark is smooth and white.

In Eucalyptus beaniana is Heterophyllie ago. The slightly pendulous leaves on adult specimens are of the same color on the top and bottom and are semi-gloss green and narrow and lanceolate with a width of 0.8 to 1.5 cm. The cotyledons ( cotyledons ) are upside-kidney-shaped.

Inflorescence and flower

Several flowers stand together in terminal inflorescences . The stalked flower buds are egg-shaped with a length of 6 to 7 mm and a diameter of 2 to 3 mm. The sepals form a calyptra that falls off early.

fruit

With a length of 5 to 6 mm, the fruit is cup-shaped or funnel-shaped and four to five fans. The fruit compartments are level with the edge or protrude.

Occurrence and endangerment

Eucalyptus beaniana occurs only in the Isla Gorge and in a state forest northeast of the Baroondah station. Both locations are in southeast Queensland , northwest of the town of Taroom on the Leichhardt Highway .

Eucalyptus beaniana grows together with other eucalyptus species on flat, sandy soils over quartz- rich sandstone .

Eucalyptus beaniana has been classified by the Australian government as "vulnerable" = endangered. One of the two locations is not in a protected area, but in a state forest where logging is carried out. Widening the streets and paths there could also endanger this existence.

Taxonomy

The first description of Eucalyptus beaniana in 1991 by Lawrence Alexander Sidney Johnson and Kenneth D. Hill under the title Systematic studies in the eucalypts - 4. New taxa in Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae) in Telopea , Volume 4, Issue 2, pp 330-332, Figures 8, 9 (map). The type material has the inscription “ QUEENSLAND: Isla Gorge Lookout, to W of carpark (25 ° 12 'S, 149 ° 58' E), K. Hill 1231, L. Johnson & A. Bean, 24 Aug. 1984 (holo NSW ; iso BRI, FRI, K, MEL, PERTH) “. The specific epithet beaniana , like the common English name , refers to one of the collectors of the type material, the botanist Anthony Bean .
