history

The Prussian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt came to the area of the city on his first expedition to Australia around November 1844 and carved signs into a 300 year old and now listed Coolibah tree. The tree stands in the center of the village. Leichhardt's original characters in the tree bark are no longer available, but have been documented. After Leichhardt passed through and his later report on the agriculturally usable land, the European settlement took place.

The place originated at Stoney Crossing on the Dawson River . In 1856 a post office was opened in Taroom. In 1857 the Hornet Bank Massacre took place at the Hornet Bank Station , 40 kilometers from Taroom , in which the Yeeman Aborigines killed eleven Europeans. The Yeeman retaliated for being given a pudding poisoned with strychnine . The tribe was then massively persecuted, especially by a survivor, and decimated considerably in the process.

In 1858 the Leichhardt Hotel was opened in Taroom and a courthouse was completed. By 1860 there were three hotels in Taroom; a school opened in 1870. The Taroom Racing Club was founded in 1874 and then several dairy farmers settled down. Two churches were built in 1896, one Anglican and one Catholic. In 1899 a hospital was completed.

In 1920 a school building was built that housed both a state and a Catholic school. Buildings burned down in Taroom in 1944 and modern buildings were constructed in 1947 and a modern school building was constructed from 1956 to 1959.
