Coordinates: 24 ° 19 ′  S , 139 ° 27 ′  E The Shire of Diamantina is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 94,730.5 km² and has about 290 inhabitants.

The Shire is located in the Channel Country in the Australian outback in the northwest of the state on the border with the Northern Territory and South Australia . It is approximately 1,400 km from the capital Brisbane and 570 km from Alice Springs .

The largest town and administrative seat of the LGA is the city of Bedourie with around 120 inhabitants. The somewhat smaller Birdsville with around 140 residents is the only other larger settlement. The Betoota settlement in the southeast of the Shire was abandoned in 2004.

The Simpson Desert National Park , the Diamantina National Park and the Astrebla Downs National Park are partially or completely in the area of ​​the Shires .

history

The area is named after the Diamantina River , which takes its name from Lady Diamantina Roma, wife of the first Governor of Queensland. In 1886 a local administration was set up in the area, first in Birdsville, south of the border with South Australia, and later moved to more central Bedourie.

The Diamantina Shire Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
