Coordinates: 22 ° 23 ′ S , 143 ° 2 ′ E The Shire of Winton is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 53,814 km² and has about 1130 inhabitants.
geography
The Shire is located in the center of the state about 1150 km northwest of the capital Brisbane .
The administrative seat of the LGA is Winton with about 880 inhabitants. Other localities are Corfield, Middleton and Opalton .
history
In 1861 the Burke and Wills expedition roamed the area and settlement began in the following years. In 1879 the village of Winton was founded and in 1886 the local administration was established.

The Winton Shire Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
