Coordinates: 25 ° 17 ′ S , 141 ° 58 ′ E The Shire of Barcoo is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 61,830 km² and has about 267 inhabitants.
geography
The Shire is located in the southeast of the state on the border with South Australia about 1,040 km west of the capital Brisbane .
The administrative seat of the LGA is Jundah with 106 inhabitants. Other localities are Farrars Creek, Stonehenge, Tocal and Windorah .
history
From 1870 the area was settled and from 1880 the places Windorah and Jundah emerged. In 1885 the district of Barcoo was created, named after the Barcoo River , which in turn took its name from the indigenous people.
administration
The Barcoo Shire Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
