Barkston Gardens

Barkston Gardens are a park and a street named after it in the London borough of Earls Court . It is named after the small town of Barkston Ash in Yorkshire . The road connects Earl's Court Road and Courtfield Gardens.

The street and park were created together in 1886 when an investor converted part of the Gunter Estate into housing developments. Previously, a private sanatorium for the mentally ill, operated by Mary Bradbury , had been on this site since 1832 , which was demolished for the construction of Barkston Gardens. When it was closed in 1878, the asylum had a total of 30 residents.

The sanatorium was located in Earls Court House , which Robert Gunter I had bought from the descendants of John Hunter in 1829 near the traditional Gunters' family home, the Earls Court Lodge . Large parts of Earls Court fell into the hands of the Gunters in the 18th century when James Gunter , a cake merchant, bought farmland in the open fields west of London to supply the London markets with the produce. Owner Robert Gunter II named the street after the Barkston Ash parliamentary district in Yorkshire, for which he was a member of the House of Commons. The 0.33 acre park is from the former garden of Earls Court House. At the time of John Hunter, his private zoo was located there. In 1993 it was bought by the local residents. There are several hotels on the street, including the Barkston Gardens Hotel , which has existed since 1905 and is housed in six interconnected apartment buildings.

Actor Henry Lytton lived and died in 54 Barkston Gardens, as did actress Ellen Terry . In the 21st century, the director John Glen lived at 9a Barkston Gardens.
