Poeppel Corner
The Poeppel Corner (in Queensland also: Poeppel's Corner ) is a point in the Australian outback , where the borders of the states of Queensland and South Australia , as well as the Northern Territory , meet, a triangle in relation to the states of Australia . Like the other three border triangles in Australia, this point can only be reached by four-wheel drive vehicles.
Augustus Poeppel , after this point is named, carried out surveys in the 1880s to find the exact course of the state borders in the interior of Australia. His expedition group pulled a post made of Eucalyptus coolabah with camels to this point and set it up. Originally the point was in a salt lake , but later it was found that the measuring chain used was a few centimeters too long. Another survey by Lawrence Wells found today's point to be the correct location.
At Poeppel Corner - just like at Cameron Corner and Surveyor Generals Corner - there is the turn of the year three times in a row because three time zones collide there.
