Coordinates: 22 ° 54 ′ S , 139 ° 54 ′ E The Shire of Boulia is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 60,905.7 km² and has about 430 inhabitants.
geography
The Shire is located in the outback in the west of the state on the border with the Northern Territory about 1,400 km west of the capital Brisbane and about 620 km east of Alice Springs .
The administrative seat of the LGA is Boulia with about 270 inhabitants. Other localities are Barkly, Buckingham, Piturie, Warburton and Warenda.
history
Burke and Wills were the first known European explorers in the region. A good 18 years passed from their expedition in 1861 to the founding of Boulia, which is said to be named after an aboriginal word for waterhole. In 1887, the Boulia district was finally established as an administrative unit.
administration
The Boulia Shire Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
