Bundaberg was founded in 1870 and has a population of around 50,000. The city developed into a trading center for the surrounding sugar cane plantations and still lives to a large extent from the sugar industry. Well-known product is the Bundaberg rum .
Tourism is also of great importance. The city is also known as the "Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef" because it is an ideal starting point for trips to the south end of the Great Barrier Reef .

Roads: Bundaberg is located at the northern end of the Isis Highway ( Ban Ban Springs - Bundaberg) and 50 km east of the junction of the Bruce Highway leading into the Northern Territory.
Waterway: Bundaberg Harbor is 20 km northeast of downtown at the mouth of the Burnett River .
Rail: Bundaberg Station is served by Queensland Rail . The fast moving Tilt Trains stop (comparable to the Pendolino ). Driving time to Brisbane is 4½ hours.
Airport: Bundaberg Airport has flights to Lady Elliot Island and Brisbane.
Local Transport: Local transport is served by Duffy's City Buses. 1000 commuters and 2000 schoolchildren are transported every day.
