Townsville is located in the east of the state on the coast about 1120 km north of the capital Brisbane .
The LGA is headquartered in downtown Townsville City. Townsville has had its own administration since 1866. Thuringowa also became an administrative district (division) in 1879, and in 1986 it became a city. In the following years, parts of the Townsville area or other LGAs were struck again and again. In 2008, Thuringowa and Townsville were fully amalgamated to form Townsville Regional City.

Townsville City Council has 13 members. The Mayor (mayor) and twelve other Councilors are elected by all residents of the region. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
