Coordinates: 9 ° 52 ′  S , 142 ° 35 ′  E The Torres Strait Island Region is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 490 km² and has about 4500 inhabitants.

geography

The region is an amalgamation of 15 of the 18 islands that lie in the Torres Strait between the Cape York Peninsula and Papua New Guinea . They are approximately 2250 km from the capital, Brisbane .

The administrative headquarters of the LGA is on Thursday Island , which itself does not belong to the LGA. The region includes the following islands: Hammond, Moa (with St Pauls and Kubin), Badu , Mabuiag , Yorke , Coconut , Sue , Yam , Darnley , Stephens , Boigu , Saibai , Dauan and the Murray Islands.

history

In 1885 a separate administration was set up for the first time for the Torres Islands, which was renamed Thursday Island Town Council in 1912 and Torres Shire in 1970. From 2002, there were separate administrations on 15 islands, which were merged in 2008 to form the Torres Strait Island Region. Thursday Island and two other islands are united in the Torres Shire .

The Torres Strait Island Regional Council has 16 members. 15 councilors are elected by residents of the 15 divisions (each island is its own constituency). The council chairman and mayor (mayor) is also elected by all residents of the region.
