Thuringowa

Thuringowa was an Australian city with about 59,000 inhabitants. It was in northern Queensland immediately to the west and above the coastal town of Townsville . Both cities together had a population of around 155,000 (as of 2004). Thuringowa was approximately 1360 km north of Brisbane and 350 km south of Cairns . In 2008 the formerly independent local administrative area (LGA) Thuringowa City was merged with Townsville City . Today a district of Townsville with about 2000 inhabitants still bears the name Thuringowa Central .

history

Before the European settlement, Aborigines of the tribes Warakamai (= Warrgamay), Nawagi (= Nyawaygi) and Wulgurukaba (= Nyawaygi), as well as perhaps Warungu (= Gugu-Badhun) lived in the area of today's Thuringowa . The official conquest of land by European settlers began in 1879 with the establishment of the 'Kreis' ("Division", later "Shire") Thuringowa. The name of the city is probably a corruption of "Thuringia" = " Thuringia ". In the following quarter century the community developed quite well, but in 1918 most of the urban settlement area of Thuringowa was transferred to Townsville. Thereafter, Thuringowa remained a rural community until after the Second World War. Between 1942 and 1945, around 70,000 soldiers were stationed in the Townsville and Thuringowa area to defend Australia against Japanese attacks. This brought with it an expansion of the infrastructure, which perhaps contributed to Thuringowa having developed into an urban settlement again since the 1960s. This was officially recognized when Thuringowa was granted city rights in 1986.

geography

Thuringowa lay immediately adjacent to Townsville, like this one on the rather short Ross River . It extended to the nearby foothills of the Great Dividing Range and to the shores of the Pacific Ocean . Probably the largest part of the municipal area was taken up by settlement area, eucalyptus tree savannah / dry forest (woodland), which is used to a greater extent for cattle farming, and mountain rainforest, which is predominantly protected either as a state forest or national park and is part of the world heritage of the Queensland wet tropics . In addition, there were also spots with various coastal vegetation, such as mangrove or a kind of marsh . There are also tree-free areas of grassland. In terms of the settlement structure, Thuringowa looks a bit like an extension or an appendage of Townsville, and this is even more the case in terms of infrastructure.
