Coordinates: 19 ° 34 ′ S , 147 ° 24 ′ E The Shire of Burdekin is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 5,043.9 km² and has about 17,000 inhabitants.

The Shire is located on the east coast of the state about 1,050 km north of the capital Brisbane .
The largest city and administrative seat of the LGA is Ayr with about 8,300 inhabitants. Other localities are Airdmillan, Airville, Alva, Barratta, Brandon, Carstairs, Clare, Colevale, Cromarty, Dalbeg, Eight Mile Creek, Fredericksfield, Giru, Home Hill, Horseshoe Lagoon, Inkerman, Jarvisfield, Jerona, Kirknie, Majors Creek, Millaroo, Mona Park, Mount Kelly, Mount Surround, Mulgrave, Osborne, Rangemore, Ravenswood, Rita Island, Shirbourne, Swans Lagoon, Upper Haughton, Wangaratta and Wunjunga.
history
The Burdekin River, which gave the Shire its name, was named by Ludwig Leichhardt after one of the sponsors of his expedition, Thomas Burdekin. In 1849 he explored the region, ten years later the first ranchers came and in 1882 the villages of Brandon and Ayr were founded. From 1888 there was an administrative district in the area, which was named after the city of Ayr until 1976, when it was renamed Burdekin Shire.

The Burdekin Shire Council has seven members. The Mayor and six other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
