The Mount Bartle Frere , from the Aboriginal Chooreechillum called, reaches a height of 1,622 meters, making it the highest mountain in Queensland , Australia . It is located 51 km from Cairns in Wooroonooran National Park , southwest of Babinda at the eastern end of the Bellenden Ker Range and forms the watershed of the Russell River .
history
The mountain was named after Sir Henry Bartle Frere by the British colonial administrator and later President of the Royal Geographical Society George Elphinstone Dalrymple in 1873 . Bartle Frere was the British governor of Cape Colony at the end of the Zulu War . The first European to climb the summit was Christie Palmerston in 1886.
The neighboring Mount Bellenden Ker is the second highest mountain in Queensland at 1,593 m.
vegetation
At the foot of the mountain there is a typical rainforest . Temperatures on the summit are around 10 ° C lower than on the coast.
The endemic trees Eucryphia wilkei grow at an altitude of over 1500 m , similar plants are only found in Tasmania and Chile . Other rare plants are Acronychia chooreechillum , Trochocarpa bellendenkerensis , Polyscias bellendenkerensis , Parsonsia bartlensis and Australia's only rhododendron , ( Rhododendron lochiae ). Furthermore, Eidothea zoexylocarya grow on mountain slopes and form an essential part of the vegetation there.
Plane crash
On April 21, 1942, an American B-25 Mitchell bomber , returning from a Japanese air battle from the Philippines , crashed on the mountain. All seven members of the crew were killed.
