The Mount Zeil is with a height of 1531 meters the highest mountain in Northern Territory , Australia . The mountain is in the MacDonnell Ranges in West MacDonnell National Park .

The nearest places are the Aboriginal settlement Papunya at a distance of 53 km, Hermannsburg is 71 km and Alice Springs 155 km away. The paved Namatjira Drive leads up to a distance of 42 km, the other slope is unpaved.

It is believed that Mount Zeil was named by Ernest Giles on his expedition in 1872. But it could also be that the mention goes back to Ferdinand von Mueller . Count Zeil was a naturalist who became known through expeditions to Svalbard and Siberia .

Mount Zeil is called the Arrernte Urlatherrke caterpillar in the language , which refers to a dreamtime story .
