Ravenshoe

Ravenshoe (pronounced: reɪvənz.hoʊ or RAYvənz-hoh ) is a small town in the northeast of the Australian state of Queensland . It is located in the Atherton Tablelands , 123 km southwest of Cairns on the Kennedy Highway . In the 2016 census, 849 inhabitants were counted.

The city lies at 930 m, making it the highest city in Queensland. It also has Queensland's highest pub , The Top Pub , and the highest train station in the state. Diagonally across from the Top Pub is Win's Gallery, which exhibits wood carvings from the region and Winsone Board's paintings . There is also Millstream Falls , the widest waterfall in Australia.

The main industry was wood processing, but in 1987 the government declared 9,000 km² of the surrounding rainforest a World Heritage Site, Wet Tropics of Queensland . Since then, the city has lived mainly from tourism and meat and milk processing.

history

Ravenshoe was founded in 1881 by John Moffat as a logging settlement after William Mazlin discovered a large number of cedars there. Living space also had to be created for the “tin rush” in neighboring Herberton and Irvinebank settlements . The city of Cairns was founded because an up-and-coming economy was developing in the table country at that time and a port for the export of tin and hemp was needed. The first sawmill was built in Ravenshoe in 1899.

Ravenshoe had been connected to Cairns by a railroad since December 11, 1916.

Attractions

Around Ravenshoe there are waterfalls, crater lakes, swamps, hiking trails, water holes, rainforest and historical landmarks. The small town also has a number of galleries and local handicrafts. The wind farm Windy Hill Wind Farm , of the Stawell Co. belongs provides (together with the Koombooloomba Dam ) enough electrical power for several cities. The Ravenshoe Steam Railway connects the small town with Tumoulin .

There are also many plant and animal species around Ravenshoe, for example a dozen different species of possum and different kangaroo species , as well as an immense number of bird species.

There is a mountain bike trail used by people from all over the Atherton Tablelands, a pony club and bridle paths.

hikes

The Misty Mountain Wilderness trails traverse Tully Gorge , Tully Falls and Wooroonooran National Parks . There are also paths to the Millstream Falls and Little Millstream Falls.

Facilities and shops

Ravenshoe has a well-known bakery, an IGA supermarket, a post office, a medical center, a video shop, a Miter-10 hardware store , a Retravision , two elementary schools ( Ravenshoe State School and St. Teresa's Primary School ), and a secondary school ( Ravenshoe State High School ).

There are plans to build a sports and recreation center because the city's location in the mountains at over 900 m altitude offers good training opportunities for competitive athletes. A 50 m swimming pool is also to be built. (Status: 2007)

Local legends

It is said that the Malaan Rainforest is home to a yowie known as the Malaan Monster . Several people have said they saw it for years. A big cat is also said to live in the rainforests. The Army Hole waterhole , which served as a swimming pond for the army during World War II , is said to haunt the ghosts of those who drowned there over the years.
