The Sunshine Coast Airport is an airport on the Australian Sunshine Coast in the state of Queensland .

history

In 1958, the Queensland government made the site of today's Sunshine Coast Airport available for the construction of a runway. In 1959, the first trial landing took place on the then grass runway. In 1961 an asphalt runway was completed. In 1979, the construction of the terminal building at the airport was also completed.

On February 9, 2017, it was announced that the Sunshine Coast Regional Council had signed a 99-year lease with Palisade Investment Partners. The new operator of the airport was already involved in several infrastructure projects in Australia and is planning a significant expansion of the airport including the construction of a new runway by 2022. These measures are intended to take account of the rapid increase in passenger numbers and to create capacities for international connections.

There are regular connections to Sydney , Melbourne and Auckland from Sunshine Coast Airport . Since 2012 there has been a seasonal winter connection to Auckland, New Zealand, offered by Air New Zealand in cooperation with Virgin Australia Airlines . This connection was and is the first international connection from Sunshine Coast Airport, but more are to be added with the expansion plans of the airport.

Passenger numbers

Sunshine Coast Airport is by far the fastest growing airport in Australia. It benefits from its location on the Sunshine Coast, a region with economic growth and numerous tourists. With a year-on-year increase in passenger numbers of 14.4%, Sunshine Coast Airport grew significantly faster than any other airport in Australia in 2016. With Virgin Australia Airlines , QantasLink and Jetstar Airways , all airlines with permanent connections at Sunshine Coast Airport expanded their capacities. On the Sydney - Sunshine Coast route, the number of passengers increased by 9.7% in 2018 compared to 2017 to 612,500 people. The Melbourne - Sunshine Coast route was used by 12.6% more passengers compared to the previous year, a total of 515,800 in 2018. This connection was one of those with the highest increase in national air traffic in Australia.
