The Lake Euramoo is a Maar in northern Queensland , Australia . The maar in the Atherton Tableland was formed about 10,000 years ago when glowing magma came into contact with groundwater and triggered an explosion. The resulting crater was later filled with rainwater.

Description of the lake

The crystal clear lake does not have the typical round shape of the maars, but a dumbbell . This unusual shape was created by the overlap of two craters that may have formed at the same time.

The area around the lake is dominated by the timber industry after European settlers invaded the area in the 1880s. The vegetation at the lake consists of subalpine rainforest or was planted with original rainforest plants and with the New Guinea araucaria ( Araucaria cunninghamii ) and exotic conifers .

The Maar is located in Danbulla National Park , a park in the Wet Tropics of Queensland , to the list of UNESCO - World Heritage listed.

Aboriginal

The Aborigines of the Ngadjonji have lived in the area of the national park for millennia , who have preserved the origins of this and other crater lakes in their country in their oral tradition for over 10,000 years: It is said that two newly-initiated men broke a taboo and angered the rainbow serpent, major spirit of the area ... As a result 'the camping place began to change, the earth under the camp roaring like thunder. The wind started to blow down, as if a cyclone were coming. The camping-place began to twist and crack. While this was happening there was in the sky a red cloud, of a hue never seen before. The people tried to run from side to side but were swallowed by a crack which opened in the ground '....

According to the dream time concept of the local Aborigines, the rainbow serpent shaped the earth, creating the four maars, Lake Eacham , Lake Barrine , Mount Hypipamee Crater including Lake Euromoo with underground connections. This has not been confirmed by diving. The maar is called by the Aborigines of the Yidinji Ngimun and by the neighboring Ngadjonji Nuta .
