Ossip Dymow , born Ossip Isidorowitsch Perelman (born February 16, 1878 in Białystok , Russian Empire (today: Poland ), † February 9, 1959 in New York City , United States ) was a Russian-born writer , screenwriter and director .

Live and act

Born in Tsarist Russia, Dymov has been publishing books in his homeland since the turn of the century, including novels, short stories, dramas and plays. His works include Ioshke Muzikant, Der Knabe Wlass and Haschen nach dem Wind . In 1913 he fled to the USA. There he continued his writing activity; his work The Cantor of Wilna served as one of the templates for the US film The Jazz Singer , which is considered the first sound film in history. In the meantime, in 1924 in Berlin Dymow's book Nju , his most important and best-known work, published in 1908, was filmed by Paul Czinner with Elisabeth Bergner in the leading role. In addition, Ossip Dymow wrote numerous pieces such as Bronx Express, Bread, Slaves of the Public, Here Runs the Bride and The East Side Professor , which were also performed on Broadway between 1922 and 1938.

Now based in Berlin, he also wrote screenplays for German film ( Rasputin and Mieter Schulze against all ) in 1931/32 (together with Adolf Lantz ). In October 1932 Dymow returned to the USA, an American citizen since April 1926. There he played theater (1933 role in his play Salt and Pepper ) and directed (October 1933 for Once Upon a Time ). The drama Germany Aflame , which he also directed in October 1933, reflected the most recent events in Germany, which had become Nazi. In 1935 Dymow wrote the screenplay for the film Sins of Man and in 1938 took part in directing the Yiddish-language film The Singing Blacksmith . In 1939 he adapted the scripts for two Yiddish-language film productions by Max Nosseck .
