The Korean FA Cup in 2016 was the 21st edition of the football - cup competition for South Korean club teams . A total of 79 teams took part in the season. The defending champion was FC Seoul .

The cup tournament started on March 12, 2016 with the first round. The winner of the cup will qualify for the group stage of the 2017 AFC Champions League .
