history

First phase from 1942 to 1979

Nexen Tire Corporation was founded in 1942 as Heung-A Rubber Industry. As a result of the Korean War , the company was only able to produce the first Korean tire in August 1956. In March 1976, Nexen Tire was first listed on the Korean KRX stock exchange .

Second phase from 1980 to 1999

In January 1985, construction of the first factory for the mass production of radial tires began . From 1987 a technology cooperation with the French tire manufacturer Michelin followed . After only four years, this cooperation came to an abrupt end and the company now operated under the name Woosung Tire. After the end of the cooperation with Michelin, a technical cooperation with the Japanese company Outsu was agreed.

Third phase from 2000 to today

At the turn of the millennium, the company decided to change its strategy and at the same time proclaimed a new corporate identity . This change in company orientation resulted in today's company and brand name Nexen Tire. Therefore, the name Nexen for the company can be derived from the word sequence Nex t C en tury.

In 2003, the management Nexen Tires decided the production of bias tires give up. Investments in the production of so-called ultra-high-performance (UHP) and sport-utility vehicle ( SUV ) tires followed.

In 2005, the company Nexen Tire applied for a patent for the production of a rubber-layered silicate nanocomposite material as a new technology. In the same year, Nexen Tire America Inc. was founded.

At the beginning of 2006, Nexen Tire decided to set up a second production site. Construction of the second plant began in May of the same year with the groundbreaking ceremony in Qingdao , China .

In 2008 the company entered the European market.

In 2009, construction began on the third Nexen plant in South Korea. The plant in Changnyeong, Gyeongnam, invested 1.2 trillion South Korean won , which corresponds to about 810 million euros. The currently youngest Nexen Tire plant went into operation after around three years of construction. In order to increase the market presence and availability of Nexen products in Europe, the decision was made in the summer of 2014 to make a greenfield investment of around 829 million euros and to build the new plant in Žatec , Czech Republic .
