The Soongsil University or University Sungsil ( Engl. Soongsil University , SSU) is a private Christian university in South Korea . It was founded in Pyongyang in 1897 , making it the first modern university in Korea. Since 1957 the campus has been located in Sangdo-dong, Dongjak-gu , Seoul .
history
The university was founded as a private school in Pyongyang on October 10, 1897 by William M. Baird, a missionary for the Northern Presbyterian Church of America . In 1900 the private school became a five-year middle school and in October 1901 it was renamed Sungsil-Hakdang ( kor. 숭실 학당 , dt. Sungsil-Akademie). The name Sungsil means something like : "to honor [God] ( 숭 , sung ) with truth and faithfulness ( 실 , sil )".
In 1905 the academy set up classes for university students. In 1906, Presbyterian and Methodist missionary organizations took part in the school administration and established a department for higher education. The academy was renamed Union Christian College (합성 숭실 대학). This was the beginning of the four-year university system in Korea.
In 1912 the Japanese colonial administration authorized the Sungsil College, and in 1925 the college was changed to a humanities college, the Sungsil College ( Japanese 崇 實 專門 學校 , Sūjitsu semmon gakkō ; 숭실 전문 학교 ) was called. On March 4, 1938, the college closed in protest against the demands of worship at the Shinto shrine .
In April 1954, after the armistice of the Korean War , Sungsil University was re-established in South Korea . In June 1957 she moved to what is now the Sangdodong campus in Seoul. In 1971 the Sungsil University and the Daejeon University (not today's Daejeon University ) were merged to form the Sungjeon University ( 숭전 숭전 ). In December 1971 she received university status. In December 1982, Sungjeon University's Daejeon Campus became Hannam University . In November 1986, Sungjeon University was renamed Sungsil University.
