The Hanyang University (HYU) is a private research university in South Korea . The main campus is in Seoul and the Education Research Industry Cluster, or ERICA campus for short, is in Ansan .

The name "Hanyang" comes from the old name of Seoul during the Silla period . Kim Lyun-joon founded the first national technical institute (DongA Engineering Institute) in 1939, which was the forerunner institution. Further facilities were structured until 1959. Hanyang University is recognized worldwide in technical research and has a network of more than 300,000 alumni from various fields. That is why the university advertises with the self-designation "Engine of Korea" (engine of Korea).

There are currently 15 faculties and 60 departments on the Seoul campus, and 8 faculties and 40 departments on the ERICA campus. The university also offers 21 graduate faculties (possibility of doing a master’s degree or a doctorate). Hanyang University has a large network of partner universities worldwide: 700 universities in 70 countries and over 2500 international students annually. The university took 171st place in the QS World University Ranking 2016 and 68th place as The World's Most Innovative Universities by Reuters . In another university ranking by JoongAng Ilbo , the Seoul campus took 2nd place and the ERICA campus 8th in South Korea.
