Pyeongchang FC is a soccer franchise based in the city of Pyeongchang , South Korea . The club takes part in the K3 League Basic , the fifth highest division in South Korea.
history
Foundation and first years (2008-2011)
Pyeongchang FC was founded on February 22, 2008 under the name Gwangju Gwangsan FC in Gwangju . The club was accepted into the K3 League as a new member after the official founding and was allowed to participate in the league in 2008 . Kim Tae-jin was introduced as the club's first coach.
In their first season, the club played surprisingly well in the league. The club finished the first half of the season in second place and was able to qualify for the league championship at the end of the season. In the second half of the season they ended up in 4th place. Thanks to the strong season, the club was able to end the season in the final table in 3rd place, which was synonymous with qualifying for the Korean FA Cup 2009 . In the following league championship, however, the club failed with 0: 1 to Hwaseong Shinwoo Electronics FC in the semifinals. Kim Tae-jin left the club after the end of the season.
In the following season, the club failed due to three missing points at the league championship and had to be content with second place. Despite the second place, the club was able to qualify again for the Korean FA Cup . In their first cup season, the club was eliminated very quickly. In the first round of the cup, the club lost against an amateur team from Gumi Siltron with 1: 2.
The K3 League 2010 season did not go very well for the club for the first time. The club ended the disappointing season in 11th place in the lower middle of the table. The cup season was also disappointing again. In the first round, the club failed at Kyung Hee University 2: 4 and was eliminated from the cup.
The following K3 League 2011 season was worse than the previous season. The club was with only 17 points at the end of the season in 13th place. By the 13th place in the league, the club could not qualify for the league championship and the Korean FA Cup.
Unsuccessful K3 League years (2012-2015)
The club was unable to match the club’s early years. In the following K3 League 2012 season, the club once again failed to make it past 13th place in the league and thus clearly missed the league championship places. Since the cup mode of the Korean FA Cup was changed, the club was able to qualify for the cup for the first time.
For the new K3 League 2013 season, the club presented a new coach. Hwang Yeong-uh took over the coaching staff for the 2013 season. Under him, however, the club could not record any success. At the end of the season they were in 15th place and Hwang Yeong-uh was dismissed as a coach. Also in the cup they were eliminated again early. There they failed at home in the first round at Dong-eui University with 0: 1.
In 2014 the club finished the season in 13th place with 25 points. In the cup, however, they just failed in the first round. Against Incheon University they failed 1: 1. Since Incheon had the home rights, Gwangju was eliminated from the cup as an away team.
At the end of the season, the club announced that the city of Pyeongchang would buy the club and move it to Pyeongchang. After a successful move, the club was renamed Pyeongchang FC.
Ahn Hong-min was introduced as the new coach of Pyeongchang FC . The club again finished the K3 League season in 13th place. In the Korean FA Cup, the club also failed again on their first round. Pyeongchang FC lost the game against Icheon Citizen FC 0-1.
Relegation and new beginning (since 2016)
The K3 League changed league mode for the 2016 season. Accordingly, all 20 K3 League clubs played against each other once and qualified in a sporting way for the new K3 League Advance and K3 League Basic .
The club landed in this new league mode in 14th place, which meant the relegation games to the K3 League Advance. In the first round of the relegation games, the club won the game against Seoul Jungnang Chorus Mustang FC 1-0 and thus qualified for the relegation final. There they failed, however, at Cheongju FC with 1: 3. Due to the defeat in the final, the club was relegated to the K3 League Basic. The cup was also disappointing again. There they were eliminated with 0-2 at Halla University .
In 2017 the club wanted to make a fresh start by signing many new players. The club still did not manage to qualify for the promotion games. At the end of the season they finished 7th with 18 points. The club also just dropped out again in the first round of the Korean FA Cup. They lost 1-0 at home to Hanyang University .
